Rugby equipment, Shirts, and Clothing
People
who are interested in rugby, but not completely sure about the rules
and how the game is played can usually figure the game out fairly easily.
The game is simple. Although it is not as popular in the United States
as it is in European countries and island nations, it is growing in
North America.
Even though there are more than eight rugby rules, those who are able
to remember these top eight rules are usually able to go out and play
a game, even if he has never played before. Some of these rules include:
• Remember, no pads – Lest a person thinks
that rugby is a game for the weak, remember there are no shoulder pads
and no helmets in rugby. It is not a sport for those who do not want
to get hit.
There is not much rugby equipment needed to play. Aside from rugby boots,
rugby shorts, rugby shirts and rugby jerseys, there are no other types
of rugby clothing or accessories needed.
• The ball is thrown backwards – Although
the point of the game is to move the ball forward, it can only be moved
forward by running. If a rugby player passes the rugby balls, they must
be passed behind to another player.
• Blocking doesn’t exist – Because
rugby is such a physical game, it is often an assumption that the game
must include a lot of blocking. Despite this, there is no blocking allowed
to assist a runner in rugby. The person who has the ball is pretty much
on his own.
• All players are created equally – In
American football, some players are offensive players while others are
defensive players. Rugby, however, is different. In rugby, all players
must be able to run, kick, pass and tackle. One second a person can
be a runner and then the very next instant converts to a tackler. There
is no buffer time.
• Rugby players must fumble – Whereas American
football players are chastised when they fumble, rugby player must fumble
from time to time. Actually, each time a rugby player is tackled, one
second is allotted to voluntarily fumble the ball. If the ball isn’t
fumbled, the player is penalized. The player who fumbles the ball is
not allowed to touch the ball again until after standing up.
• People cannot tackle and run – One of
the other rules that those who often play American football must learn
to play with is the rule that does not allow them to pick up a fumbled
ball after they have tackled a person until after they have stood on
their feet. Doing this will also result in a penalty.
• 30 players at a time – Each team will
field 15 players at all times. This differs from American football,
in which each team sports 11 players at a time.
• A dropped ball is a penalty – If a teammate
pitches a ball to another as they are charging down the field, a penalty
will be called. This is called a “knock on.” When this occurs,
the other team is allowed the opportunity to take possession of the
ball at the same spot where the drop occurred. This is especially dangerous
when it happens close to an end zone.
